IDIOT BOX

Or is it? The humble television used to be referred to as such but I wonder if it could still be so.
It used to be called this because the programs were quite low quality and viewers just watched without any great deal of emotion, and conversation suffered; much like robots, they just looked on.

But TV has changed. And visual equipment has come into its own as it were, thanks in no small part to a famous naturalist by the name of Sir David Attenborough.

His Life on Earth series, for example; a more spectacular show one would be hard pressed to find. And if it wasn't for TV none of us would see such images. From the mighty killer whales self beaching themselves to catch an unfortunate seal, to the image of Sir David sitting with the gorilla family as they seem totally unfazed by his presence, these images are far from idiotic. Where else are we going to see such a sight? In a zoo? Wildlife Park?

What has appeared to slide into the position of idiot box, however, is the attachment of computer games to the television - when kids spend all day in front of it zapping bugs and living a virtual life instead of being outside running around. Normally stuffing cakes and buns down their willing gullets, and we wonder why we're all so fat?

I love TV, except for the most part Australian free to air TV which is dire and actually DOES deserve the title of idiot box, so full of crap the programming is. DO NOT even get me started on that Big Brother fiasco. Reality TV my arse!

Nope! Modern TV is far from a medium for idiots. It has progressed to an entertaining, educational and informative medium and is almost a staple of most of us. Visual entertainment is a multi-billion dollar industry that has now become interactive.

Idiot box? I think not.

as for video games, there are games that do as well as teaching as some informational shows. they have been proven to significantly raise hand eye co-ordination. Some doctors have shown a 60% or more achievement rate and less accidents after playing a half an hour of "Halo." Plus the brain has been shown to be significantly more active when doing something like video games, than watching tv. In fact, in most studies, watching TV lowers brain function to even less activity than sleeping. I'm a strict believe in the idea we shouldn't blame the games, just be careful of the ones we play.

In order to have the Idiot Box, first you must have the Idiots! :)

Haha, Jayney...hohoho - that just about covers it mate. Sorta like the man HOLDIN the gun is the dangerous part, not the gun itself.

Missy: I don't. Well, I do, in as far as I AM glued to it, but my viewing choice suits the more discerning viewer (he says pompously), such as the Discovery channel to which you allude, (that and...I'm a saddo with no mates Hoho...)
However, and I'm ready for the female response to this, I do find your American show, Married with Children, to be one of the funniest on TV (and actually not without a message though probably not the one that's accurately reflective of the typical response).

MM: I started reading your post and got to the 60% reference and stopped. I considered banning all statistics on the blog cause they're bloody useless for the most part (for example, I could find an 'expert' to present the opposite theory - for any given statistic - if I paid him enough), but then almost immediately thought what that would do for my claim of freedom of speech and kept 'schtuum'. So keep sayin what y'want (within the bounds of decency of course).
Yes, hand-eye coordination is helped by some games, admittedly and though this may have certain benefits, they are outweighed by sitting on one's rapidy expanding arse all day playing in a virtual world while your social skills go down the pan.

More of the 'player not the game'...

Love it or hate it - TV's integral now and has been for some time.

Besides which, if you don't have the telly on 24/7 they might just show something new and then you'll have missed it! LOL

To be honest, I spend a large chunk of my day tapping away on this computer - an IDIOT BOX of note! Or could it just be the operator? :)

A thought! Tennis and ping pong are excellent hand/eye co-ordination activities - and you get exercise too! No?

Y'know it's funny, Jayney, that exact thing happened to me with the 9/11 thing - completely missed it - had to watch the reruns. Wasn't especially funny though.

Yeah - computers, though I tend to spend lost of my time working as opposed to having fun per se. It can be fun - just not always lol.

Any ball sport would have the same training for hand-eye. And you're exactly right, with the benefit of exercise.

That indeed is the advantage.

Glad to see you again, Jayney. Take care, my dear.

No it isn't, Missy, more's the pity. When was the last time you saw a wee lad climbing a tree?

Oh man, there was this line of trees planted between the huosing development where I used to live and a quarry, to stop the dust encroachin g. The trees were about, oh, maybe 8-10 feet apart and tall and thin.
As kids we used to climb to the very top of the first one and begin to sway until we could grab the top of the next one.
We'd get a good hold and let go of the original. It would spring back and the one we know held onto would do the same - sway even more with the added weight of a wee lad.
Onot the next, and next, the whole way to the last one.

It was ggggreat... I felt like a monkey.
Aaah...the innocence of youth.
